Step 4: Flatsįlatting (or flats) is blocking in color that serves as placeholders. Let’s do some tidying up! With the inks on their own layer, run through them with the Eraser Tool (E) to get rid of any unwanted marks. But still, we’ll often still need to clean up our inks digitally. It lessens the work later in the digital stage. It’s always a good practice to erase as much of your pencil lines before you scan in your inks. We won’t need to do anything to it anymore. Move this layer below the line art layer. Use Edit > Fill (Shift + F5) to fill the entire layer with white. Create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + N). Now simply keep improving the image colors using this same technique and changing the layer opacity if needed to make a more subtle transition.Click the image below to see it in full size. To make a more subtle effect, decrease the layer opacity to about 75%. Select a soft round brush with a color similar to the jacket and paint over the grayed areas as shown. In this output option, no masks are made and the image manipulation could be easier. In the Output dropdown menu you can select different output options, but the Colorize Neural Filter mask some image areas to work, so a good option is to choose 'Duplicate Layer'.
